Learning & Development

Outdoor Play

At Brunswick we are very lucky to have an enclosed garden area with mature trees and grass.  We enjoy learning about the changing seasons and the world around us as well as experiencing ‘Mud Week’ and campfires.  The children can dig in the mud kitchen and sandpit, develop their physical skills on the climbing frame and bikes, and use their imagination building with construction materials.

Our allotment allows us to learn about planting, growing and harvesting; we enjoy cooking and eating many of the things we grow.

We are lucky to have the use of an enclosed woodland area allowing us to take groups on ‘Woodland Adventures’. Children build physical skills, confidence, independence and resilience through hands-on experiences and supported risk-taking, while also promoting emotional wellbeing and social skills.  Learning through nature also encourages curiosity, creativity and problem solving whilst fostering respect for the environment.  We encourage parents and carers to join us on these trips.

Parent Partnership

At Brunswick we recognise the importance of a strong parent partnership. Parents know their child best, and by sharing information about interests, routines and needs, staff can meet each child’s individual needs more effectively.  We invite parents to take part in play sessions and home visits to ease the transition into nursery.  We welcome parents into the nursery to support their child to settle and share special events, as well as to share their own skills and hobbies.  Parents are kept up to date with their children’s learning through an online platform where both staff and parents can upload observations and photos.

Children’s Interests and Schemas

At Brunswick Nursery, we understand that following children’s interests helps them learn in a happy, confident, and meaningful way. When children can explore things they are curious about, they become more engaged, motivated, and eager to learn.

We also observe children’s schemas: the repeated patterns of behaviour, like transporting objects, filling and emptying, or lining things up. These patterns show how children explore, think and make sense of the world around them.  By combining children’s interests and understanding their schemas, we can provide activities that match their natural interests and help deepen their learning in a meaningful and enjoyable way.

Celebrating Multiculturalism

Celebrating diversity in our nursery helps children learn about the world and develop respect for others from an early age. We celebrate different cultures, languages, and family traditions through everyday activities such as sharing multicultural stories and music, exploring festivals like Diwali, Chinese New Year, and Eid, tasting foods from around the world, and books and role play resources that reflect diverse communities. We also welcome families to share their own traditions and experiences, helping children feel proud of who they are while learning to value and respect others.
